Vanilla Forum

By AdamThompson 7y ago

This forum is Vanilla Forum (link at bottom of page). I'm experimenting with using it. I like its new approach, but the layout is kind of off-putting. I'm giving it time to see if I get used to it. There are more traditional templates for it, such as the one used by Penny Arcade. Your thoughts?

If there are any specific improvements you can imagine, let me know and maybe I can hack them in. One I want is for threads in the list show who started them rather than who posted last.

My only gripe is it's a little unwieldy to see who might be replying to a post you made. Other than that I'm more than happy with it. It feels really sleek.

-Slinks 7y ago
@Slinks Do you mean, such as my reply right now? I think the @name syntax is meant to help with that.

I considered threaded forums (where your reply branches under another comment, like Reddit), but decided the more collaborative discussion of a flat forum is better for this community.

-AdamThompson 7y ago
@AdamThompson I discovered that by accident when replying to the intro thread. I just figured it would come out as plain text. I can see where this style of messaging would aid a collaborative discussion pending everyone adopts the @name convention.

-Slinks 7y ago
I love the layout and the design, it is very minimalist and simple to use, but I agree with @Slinks as it could be difficult to know if somebody has replied to a post or thread, but yes the @name function helps - reminds me of twitter!

Also, I might come up with a few mock-up logo designs for the game/forums for fun - I could post them to see what you guys think when I'm done?

But anyway yes; the forum is nice, and I kind of like the blue theme too for now anyway :P

The more I think about it the more I like it. It might not work for a huge community but I think it might encourage a small group to read and consider more than just things that pertain to themselves. This could be pretty helpful to the spread of ideas.

-Slinks 7y ago
Sticking with this forum template for now, plus it's the official one so there's no quirks or hacks. @Slinks I hope it does help.

@Alcapops A logo could be awesome. The current one for the game is temporary stock art.

-AdamThompson 7y ago
Posted a topic for anything design related :P

I personally like the forum. Feels easy to use and intuitive and no space is given up to useless information (how many posts a user has made, avatars, etc).

One thing I'll be glad to never see is signatures, especially ones with imagery in!

Works perfectly on the iPhone too :)

-Ross 7y ago
@Ross Full agreement about signatures and the rest.

I've been thinking about moving names on comments to a left column. Names between comments seem to break the flow of reading a discussion.

-AdamThompson 7y ago
Tweaked the forum layout a little; made comment bodies the only thing on the left so they're quick to skim, faded out avatars halfway, and made "Post edited by..." less bright red.

-AdamThompson 7y ago
Moved this thread to General.

-AdamThompson 7y ago
I think the forum is great, This is the first time I have ever used Vanilla forums. I'm really into how minimal and sleek the design is. The only drawback I can see is maybe not being able to put a little more personal information into your profile, such as location, sky/aim etc

-Tony11harp 7y ago
@Tony11harp Good to know, thanks. I can't find any good Vanilla plugins for extra profile information, so that'll have to wait. I might add that when I get in there to add game account management.

-AdamThompson 7y ago
@AdamThompson Is this Vanilla 1 or Vanilla 2? I'm assuming 2?

-Tony11harp 7y ago
@Tony11harp Yes, Vanilla 2.

-AdamThompson 7y ago
I very much like this, it is simplistic. However a larger community will need a more complex system, so we can share embedded screen shots and videos etc.

-atomic 7y ago
@atomic Thanks. I'll play it by ear and add things when we need them. I'm not sure I like media mixed in with discussion. People can always link out to Imgur and Youtube. Maybe I'll make a separate system for sharing screenshots and videos.

-AdamThompson 7y ago
Also the forum is great on my HTC evo 3d as well, just lost internet so gotta use my phone lol, everything is displayed neatly and its all very easy to navigate as well.

-Tony11harp 7y ago
Ah screw it I am not good with computer...

-Slinks 7y ago
I find it really easy on the eyes, easy to navigate, send private messages etc. And I agree with Atomic too.

-Arka 7y ago
I would also like it to display more discussions on the main forum page without having to click "more discussions". A little picky suggestion, but it would make a big difference.

-atomic 7y ago
@atomic I see what you mean. When there are multiple categories (like for alpha testers right now) it display a summary of each category on that main page. I could make the main page mash all discussions together, but I hate that.

Here's what I'll try: The main page will now display all General posts. And then other categories can be accessed through the menus.

-AdamThompson 7y ago
I think we'll tweak this more once there are more public categories.

-AdamThompson 7y ago
Changed that back, didn't like it :-P

-AdamThompson 7y ago
Trying out categories-only on main page. I think it makes it much clearer what's going on.

-AdamThompson 7y ago
@AdamThompson I think Adding a category for game discussions, and one for off topic discussions would make it a little more clearer whats going on :)

-Tony11harp 7y ago
@Tony11harp @AdamThompson Or maybe seperate it into categories that may not seem useful at the moment but will be soon.
Examples: News (Game updates/site outages/announcements), Media (official trailers/screenshots), General Discussion, Development Discussion, Bugs, Offtopic and Alpha/Beta Testing (Hidden to nontesters.)

Quoting posts when replying is something I sorely miss, it makes it much easier to see what people are replying to. Seems like there is a simple plugin that enables this here http://vanillaforums.org/addon/quotes-plugin.

-thejanitor 7y ago
@thejanitor I often miss quoting too. Could you tell me more about why you miss it? I'm intentionally experimenting with not having quoting, because it seems to me it forces me to reply to the point of someone's comment rather than to something specific they said. Or, to the point of the whole thread.

(Also, I have that plugin but it doesn't work for some reason, I'll have to fix it if I do want to turn on quoting.)

-AdamThompson 7y ago
@AdamThompson When replying to a post where someone has made multiple points being able to quote it and split the quote up into the points makes the reply much clearer. Also if someone has made multiple posts and you just want to respond to a single one quoting said post makes it much more obvious.

-thejanitor 7y ago
@thejanitor Thanks, agree.

-AdamThompson 7y ago
@AdamThompson
Its not possible to disable notifications. You can deselect the ceckbox and save but when you open the preference dialog again, the checkbox is still selected.

-sxe 7y ago
@sxe Thanks, hmm, it works on mine, what browser+version are you using?

-AdamThompson 7y ago
@AdamThompson
Tried it with chromium: 18.0.1025.162, Firefox: 13.0a2 and a third webkit based browser, so i don't think its a browser problem.

-sxe 7y ago
@sxe Aha! Turns out it was sometimes working for me, sometimes not. It was due to a bug in my "server status" plugin code, now fixed. Thanks again :)

-AdamThompson 7y ago
@AdamThompson Whatever you did, now the server interprets my Kindle as a mobile device, and the site looks nice :O

-Ozymandias 7y ago
I don't think what I did should have changed that :o But good! lol

-AdamThompson 7y ago
@AdamThompson
Works now, thx
